Family Style Brings 28 Restaurants Inside ComplexCon on October 3 and 4

Twenty-eight kitchens under one convention roof, and a ticket policy worth reading before you go.




Family Style Food Festival returns on Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4, this time built inside ComplexCon at the Los Angeles Convention Center. It is a different animal from the standalone festival Family Style ran at LA State Historic Park in June, which we covered in Family Style Food Festival Is Back. Same organizers, same collaborative instinct, different scale and a very different set of rules for getting in.


ComplexCon is marking its 10th anniversary this year, with Playboi Carti and Hiroshi Fujiwara of Fragment Design serving as artistic directors and evening concerts at Crypto.com Arena headlined by Carti and Ken Carson. For our purposes the music is the backdrop. The food hall is the story.





The full lineup


Twenty-eight operators are on the bill, and the mix is unusually good for a convention floor. A few genuine Los Angeles heavyweights, a few collaborations that exist only for this weekend, and a lot of names that built their followings on Instagram before they had a dining room.


  • The heavy hitters. Majordomo, David Chang's Chinatown restaurant. Pizzeria Sei, one of the most decorated pizzerias in the city. The Boiling Crab. Bone Kettle. Sandoitchi.

  • The collaborations. Big Baby's Cornbread with Hilltop Coffee and Kitchen. Kuro Artisanal Pizza with Satoshi Nakamoto. Handles Coffee with VandyThePink. Randy's Spammys with momotoys. These are the one-weekend-only items Family Style built its reputation on.

  • The rest of the floor. Tacos Royale, Marathon Burger, Sidecar, Unreal Poke, Henry's Pizza, Carmen's Empanadas, Rocky's, Rokstar Chicken, Wi Jammin Cafe, House of Wings, Creaminal, La Sorted's, Seoul Taco, Silky's Southern Comfort, Modder's Kitchen, Frank 'n Frank's, RC Cafe and Whatever Floats.

  • Drinks. Gin and Juice, with Modelo as the presenting beverage sponsor.


The part that catches people out


There is no separate food festival ticket. Family Style lives inside ComplexCon, which means a ComplexCon pass is the only way to reach any of it. That is a meaningfully different proposition from June, when the festival ran on its own in a public park.


Ticket tiers run Convention Only or Convention and Concert, sold as two-day passes or single Saturday and Sunday passes. Only tickets bought through ComplexCon.com are valid. The organizers state plainly that anyone arriving with a ticket from an unauthorized reseller will not be let in, which is worth taking seriously given how much secondary inventory circulates around this event.


Getting in, and back in


  • Re-entry at the Convention Center: allowed throughout the day as long as your wristband stays on your wrist. Useful if you want to pace yourself across twenty-eight vendors.

  • Re-entry at the concerts: not allowed once you are inside Crypto.com Arena.

  • Ages: everyone six and older needs a ticket for ComplexCon. For the arena concerts, everyone three and up needs one, with children two and under admitted on a lap.

  • Minors: anyone under 13 must be with a parent or guardian at all times, and organizers recommend the same for anyone under 18.

  • Will Call: at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

  • Parking: the West Hall and South Hall garages. Per the Convention Center, the event spans West Hall A, South Hall GHJK, Petree Hall, Concourse Hall and Kentia Hall, so check the venue map before picking a garage.


How to work the floor


Twenty-eight vendors across two days is more than anyone eats in one visit, and the convention format means lines rather than open lawn. A few things worth planning around:


  • Go for the collaborations first. The one-weekend-only items are what sell out, and they are the reason to be there rather than at any of these restaurants on a normal Tuesday.

  • Use the re-entry policy. Eat, step out, come back. The wristband makes that free.

  • Saturday and Sunday are different rooms. Carti headlines Sunday, Ken Carson Saturday, and the crowd composition shifts with them.

What we have our eye on: Kuro Artisanal Pizza with Satoshi Nakamoto, and Big Baby's Cornbread with Hilltop. Collaborations that only exist for forty-eight hours are the whole argument for a festival like this. FJM will report back after the weekend.
