Hollywood, Get Ready for a Taste of Mexico City: La Popular at the Hollywood Ovation Has Arrived

Let me tell you, when an invitation from Lawrence Moore & Associates lands on my desk, I clear my calendar. As the masterminds behind some of L.A.'s most unforgettable culinary events—like the Manhattan Beach Food & Wine Festival (which was, hand on heart, phenomenal) and the Chefs Love LA benefit that raised over $850,000 for World Central Kitchen—they know how to throw a party. So, when they beckoned me to a media preview for La Popular at Ovation Hollywood, I knew I was in for a treat and some of the best food in Los Angeles, California.


And what a treat it was.


We were greeted with an endless parade of unbelievably delicious bites: succulent ribeye tacos, zesty shrimp ceviche, mexican street corn, shrimp tacos, and exquisite ahi tuna tostadas with crispy leeks and a kick of chipotle aioli. The drinks? Absolutely amazing. It was a whirlwind of flavor that left me buzzing with excitement for what was to come.


From Mexico City with Love


La Popular isn't just another taco joint. This is an elevated, high-energy dining experience straight from the heart of Mexico City, one of the world's great gastronomic epicenters. Brought to the U.S. by the acclaimed Grupo Carolo hospitality group, La Popular is on a mission to share the genuine culture, traditions, and history of Mexico through its cuisine.

The philosophy is simple: take straightforward dishes and elevate them with exceptional ingredients, adventurous flavors, and innovative preparations. From the house-made salsas to the rich, complex mole, every dish is a nod to authentic Mexican recipes and the country’s deep sense of community.


The Vibe


Located in the iconic Ovation Hollywood, just steps from the Walk of Fame, La Popular boasts chic, modern interiors and a playlist that creates an unbeatable vibe. But the real showstopper? The view. The expansive patio, complete with fire features and a weatherized canopy, set against a stunning panoramic backdrop of the iconic Hollywood Sign, this extraordinary venue blends timeless Hollywood glamour with modern Mexican cuisine. Whether you're sipping a cocktail at the bar or enjoying a meal under the stars, you’re constantly reminded that you're in the heart of Tinseltown.


The Agave-Centric Bar


Speaking of cocktails, the beverage program, led by the brilliant Trevor Tyler, is a masterclass in mixology. With a library of over 80 tequilas and mezcals sourced from small-batch distilleries in Jalisco and Oaxaca, the agave-centric menu is a dream for spirit lovers.

Tyler, one of FSR’s “40 Restaurant Stars on the Rise,” showcases his artistry with signature cocktails that are as inventive as they are delicious. We’re talking about the clarified mezcal punch of the Yucatán Toucan and the smoke-kissed spectacle of the Oaxacan Jellyfish. It’s a modern interpretation of Mexican drinking culture, and it’s spectacular.


Don't Skip Dessert


No fiesta is complete without something sweet. The Churros with rich chocolate and silky cajeta are a must-try, as is the elegant Flan. But for a truly decadent finale, the Butter Cake with strawberries and passion fruit custard is pure, melt-in-your-mouth bliss. Believe me we had 3 servings of each at the event! (sorry not sorry).


The Verdict?


La Popular is more than just a restaurant; it’s a destination. Its a Food Journal Magazine LA Foodie Hotspot and a Must Try! It’s where authentic Mexican tradition meets Hollywood glamour, creating an experience that is both exciting, deeply satisfying and some of the best food in Los Angeles.


The restaurant officially opens on Monday, September 22nd, and I suggest you book your table now. This place is about to become the spot in Hollywood.
