A Boston North End Seafood Institution From 1973 Opened Its First West Coast Room in Pasadena

The Daily Catch has been cooking Sicilian seafood in Boston's North End since 1973. Its fourth restaurant, and the first one outside Massachusetts, is now open on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena.

Fifty years in one neighborhood, then a move west

The original opened in the North End in 1973 and built its following on Sicilian style seafood and pasta. The Pasadena restaurant is the company's fourth location and its first expansion beyond Massachusetts. It took the former Japon Bistro space in the Playhouse District.

The fish comes from Boston

The family runs its own seafood processing facility in Boston, and East Coast seafood is flown in. That is an unusual supply line for a Los Angeles restaurant, and it is the reason the menu reads the way it does rather than leaning on local halibut and rockfish.

What is on the menu

Taken from the restaurant's own listings:

  • Black squid ink pasta

  • Lobster fra diavolo

  • Linguine with clams

  • Calamari, fried and stuffed

What we have our eye on

We have not eaten here yet. The chef's counter seats one to four and books separately from the dining room, which is usually where a kitchen like this is most worth sitting. The squid ink pasta is the dish the Boston rooms are known for, and it is the first thing we want to see on a plate in Pasadena.

Pasadena has been busy

The Playhouse District keeps drawing restaurants, and the wider city has had a strong run. Our Best of Pasadena coverage walks the neighborhoods, and Pasadena also hosts the Los Angeles Chocolate Salon and Masters of Taste at the Rose Bowl.

Visiting

The Daily Catch is at 927 East Colorado Boulevard, Suite 102, Pasadena, CA 91106, in the Playhouse District. The phone is (626) 314-1205. Reservations are on Tock, where the dining room, the bar and the chef's counter book separately. Current hours run 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and street parking is the norm on that stretch of Colorado.
