Skywalker Grill Opens Atop the Lucas Museum September 22, and You Do Not Need a Ticket

A rooftop restaurant on a billion-dollar museum, and the detail most coverage buried: you do not need a museum ticket to eat there.

Skywalker Grill opens on Tuesday, September 22, the same day the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opens its doors in Exposition Park. It sits on top of the museum, and the part worth leading with is that it is fully open to the public. No gallery admission required, and it stays open after the galleries close.

The museum is a roughly $1 billion project co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, landing on an 11-acre Exposition Park campus after more than a decade of site negotiations, design revisions and a failed Chicago bid. The building is Ma Yansong's double-saucer design for MAD Architects. The restaurant itself was designed by Rockwell Group and is operated by Rhubarb Events and Hospitality Collection, part of Oak View Group, under managing director Katie Harel.

The menu

The framing is refined American cooking built on California seasonal ingredients, served at lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, with a dedicated kids' menu. From the published opening menus:

• Skywalker Ranch Wagyu Burger, $37. The signature, and the most direct nod to the ranch the restaurant is named for.

• Lobster corn dogs and crab cakes, among the shareable starters, alongside a dozen oysters.

• Crispy chicken Milanese, honey miso glazed salmon, striped bass, braised short ribs and roasted chicken breast across the mains.

• House-made pastas and four seasonal salads, including a rigatoni with summer vegetable ragout.

• A Healthy Bowl at lunch with wild rice, vegetables, grilled tofu, avocado, savory granola and garden vinaigrette, which is the vegan option.

• Magic Pan crepes for dessert, a name that will mean something to anyone who remembers the creperie chain that ran through American malls in the 1970s and 80s.

The room

Rockwell Group built the space around glowing Corian surfaces and handcrafted cherry wood detailing, with a central bar anchoring the floor and panoramic views over Los Angeles. Sitting on the museum roof in Exposition Park puts the Coliseum, the Natural History Museum and the California Science Center in the frame.

Booking it, and one thing to check

Reservations opened on Resy on August 11, more than a month ahead of the debut, and they are live now for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. Given this is the most anticipated opening on the fall calendar and it sits on top of a museum opening the same day, a walk-in table on September 22 is not a plan.

One thing worth confirming before you book opening day. September 22 is a Tuesday, and the restaurant's listed regular schedule shows Tuesday as a closed day. That is almost certainly an opening-week exception rather than a contradiction, but it is worth a check on Resy or the restaurant page before you drive out.

Visiting

Skywalker Grill is at One Lucas Plaza in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, on the roof of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

• Admission: none required. The restaurant is open to the public independent of the museum.

• Transit: the Metro E Line stops at Expo Park and USC, a short walk, which matters given Exposition Park parking on an event day.

• Note: Exposition Park is also hosting World Cup and LA28 activity, so check event schedules before driving.
