Little Luck Is Open on the Sunset Strip, and the Dining Room Looks Like a Ryokan

The nightclub is gone and the izakaya is serving. Little Luck is open at 9229 West Sunset Boulevard, across from Soho House.
We covered the transition in October, when the h.wood Group announced it was converting Bootsy Bellows, a bottle-service club it ran for more than a decade, into its first Japanese concept. Erik Idos, who spent nearly a decade at Nobu, runs the kitchen. The room is now open, and there is more to report.
The Room Is The First Thing People Mention
The Infatuation's Garrett Snyder, in a preview published October 22, describes a glammed-up Japanese restaurant whose “massive dining room looks like a five-star ryokan.” The old club bones are gone.
Snyder is explicit that the publication has not eaten there yet, so that is a description of the space rather than a verdict on the food.
What Is On The Menu
The published menu runs izakaya-shaped: quail karaage, a caviar egg salad on milk bread, sashimi and rolls, and charcoal-grilled skewers.
Early diners are pointing at a slightly different set. Recurring mentions include the quail karaage, a toro crudo, a ceviche, a wagyu donabe and clams meant for sharing. The egg salad and milk bread come up repeatedly, as do the hash browns, with one diner noting the potatoes ran salty.
The cocktails are run by a bartender who came from Tokyo Noir.
One Summer Day, a washed tequila drink, is the one early reviewers single out.
The lychee martini drew a complaint for tasting less boozy than it was sold as.
Those are public Google reviews from the first weeks, not our plates. There are fewer than a dozen of them so far.
Why This One Is Worth Watching
It is an in-house conversion, not a lease turning over. h.wood did not lose the room. The company decided that an address which made its money after midnight should make it at dinner instead, and spent real money dressing it as a traditional inn to do so.
Whether the Strip supports a $$$$ Japanese dining room where a nightclub used to be is the actual question, and it will take longer than three weeks to answer.
