Mistral Is Opening a Raw Bar Next Door, Named for the Man Who Started It in 1988

The men who took over Mistral are opening a raw bar in the space next door, and they are naming it after the man they bought the restaurant from.
Henri's is going into the space adjoining Mistral at 13422 Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, and it is named for Henri Abergel, who opened Mistral in 1988 and ran it for more than three decades.
The Naming Is The Story
Restaurants change hands in Los Angeles constantly, and the usual move is to strip the old name off the building. This is the opposite of that.
Abergel was looking to retire. Word reached Jonah Freedman and Josh Migdal through Migdal's father, a longtime Mistral diner. Other buyers were reportedly interested and those conversations did not work out. Abergel came to the friends and family preview after the sale, which Freedman described to Los Angeles Magazine as a “pretty special moment.”
Then they put his name on the next room.
What It Will Be
A raw bar, by design feeding the restaurant beside it. Freedman has described guests starting with cocktails and oysters at Henri's before moving into Mistral for a full dinner. Later in the evening, the plan is for Henri's to turn into a cocktail bar in its own right.
That is a sensible piece of engineering for a 38-year-old bistro. Mistral already runs a night owl menu that cuts the bill 25 percent for anyone seated between 9 and 9:30 p.m. on weekdays, or 9:30 and 10 on weekends. A cocktail bar next door extends the same thought: give the room somewhere to send people before and after dinner, rather than turning the lights up at ten.
Who Is Behind It
Jonah Freedman is the restaurateur behind Freedman's and Greekman's, originally from Toronto. Josh Migdal is Mistral's culinary director, a Valley native who also came through Greekman's. They took over Mistral around late October 2025, ran it as it was for a stretch, then closed for a few weeks over the summer to renovate, adding new millwork and red banquettes before relaunching.
They also carried over house accounts for longtime regulars, which is an unusual thing to preserve and says something about what they thought they were buying.
What We Do Not Know Yet
Quite a lot. Henri's was reported as arriving by late fall and does not have a Google Business Profile, a published address of its own, posted hours or an announced opening date. No chef has been named for the raw bar specifically, and no menu has been released.
We will update this when the restaurant announces a date.
