A Growing Los Angeles Matcha Brand

The Rok name comes from the Korean word chorok, meaning green, per the brand's own site. The Koreatown original on Olympic Boulevard led the group's rise. A Wilshire Boulevard location on Koreatown's east edge followed. Studio City was the third Rok to open, and the Silver Lake location on Sunset Boulevard has since followed, putting the group at four in service across Los Angeles. The Infatuation and Beli have both crowned Rok the best matcha in Los Angeles this year. It also lands in the middle of a busy season for new restaurants in Los Angeles.

The brand is women-owned and supports Girls Inc., a national nonprofit focused on the development of young women. Rok's product line runs on ceremonial-grade matcha sourced from Uji, one of Japan's oldest and most renowned matcha regions, where stone-ground tea is made from shade-grown leaves.

The Studio City Room

The Studio City space is the largest Rok to date, and the room is anchored by an interior tree that gives the cafe a green centerpiece consistent with the brand's namesake. It reads as a cafe built for lingering, though the group's stance is a deliberate one: Rok does not offer Wi-Fi at any location. Per its FAQ, the choice is intentional. "We've intentionally created a space that encourages meaningful connection," the brand writes.

What We Have Our Eyes On

For the Studio City opening, the pour to try is the location exclusive. From there, work through the standing menu:

  • Blueberry Shortcake Matcha Duo — the Studio City-only pour, made with cake paste blended into the drink.

  • Matcha Duo ($7.50) — the two-layer cream-capped signature that has become Rok's calling card.

  • Mugwort Duo — a non-caffeinated Korean herbal option with an earthier profile.

  • Einspanner — the Vienna-style whipped-cream-topped coffee that anchors the coffee side.

Almond and oat milk are the two dairy alternatives on offer, and every matcha-based drink contains caffeine. For the full menu and location details, see rok-coffee.com.
