Ueki Is a 14-Seat Omakase Counter Hidden Inside Blue Ribbon Sushi in the Palisades

Behind a curtain at the back of a returning favorite, fourteen seats and a hinoki counter.

Blue Ribbon Sushi is one of the tenants that came back when Palisades Village reopened on August 15. What it brought with it is new. Ueki is a 14-seat omakase counter built inside the restaurant, hidden behind a handcrafted shibori curtain, and it is the kind of room that tends to get found quickly.

The Palisades Village dining directory describes it as a serene cedar-clad space with warm lighting, rich wood finishes and a hinoki sushi counter, designed around the craft of Japanese dining rather than volume. Hinoki, Japanese cypress, is the traditional choice for sushi counters because it is soft-grained, faintly aromatic and naturally resistant to bacteria, which is why serious counters are built from it rather than a harder wood.

Why fourteen seats matters

A counter that size is a deliberate constraint. It caps covers per service, which means the pace is set by the chef rather than the floor, and it puts every guest within conversation distance of the person cutting fish. That format is common in Los Angeles now, but it is unusual on the Westside north of Santa Monica, and it is the first of its kind at Palisades Village.

Blue Ribbon Sushi itself is a returning tenant, part of the group that has run rooms in New York and Los Angeles for years. Building a separate omakase counter inside a restaurant that already existed on the property is a notably ambitious move for a center that spent 19 months rebuilding.
