Perched on the rooftop of The Sun Rose West Hollywood, Merois takes Los Angeles dining to spectacular new heights. With sweeping, panoramic views of the city from high above Sunset Boulevard, the restaurant pairs an open-air atmosphere with an extraordinary menu. Here, Executive Chef Nicole Abisror masterfully executes a culinary vision that celebrates the sophisticated subtleties of Japanese, Southeast Asian, and French/California cuisine. This once again was some of the best food in Los Angeles and highly recommended.
The Puck Legacy
To understand the magic of Merois, we must look at the legendary influence of Wolfgang Puck. Born in Austria and inspired by his mother's cooking, Puck began his formal culinary training at just 14 years old. After working in some of France’s greatest kitchens, including Maxim’s in Paris and L’Oustau de Baumanière in Provence, he brought his talents to the United States.
Arriving in Los Angeles in 1975, Puck quickly became a favorite among Hollywood elites at Ma Maison. By 1982, he opened his flagship restaurant, Spago, on the Sunset Strip. Spago became an instant international phenomenon, earning Puck multiple James Beard Foundation Awards. Over the decades, he continued to shape the American fine dining landscape, opening the groundbreaking Asian-fusion concept Chinois on Main and the Michelin-starred contemporary steakhouse CUT. Today, his global empire spans three companies, yet his commitment to bridging tradition and invention remains fully intact at Merois.
Elevated Flavors Under the Stars
Under the careful guidance of Executive Chef Nicole Abisror, Merois delivers a menu that feels both globally inspired and distinctly Californian. The dishes showcase vibrant ingredients and bold flavor profiles.
During our visit, we started with the Hamachi Tostada, which brightens the palate with sharp yuzu kosho and creamy avocado. This was our favorite dish and a must have! I recommend ordering this dish as a starter. Next arrived the Crispy Blue Fin Tuna, resting on a bed of short grain rice and finished with chili aioli and ponzu for a perfect balance of heat and acidity. Absolutely delicious!
The dumpling selection proves equally impressive. The Ginger Beef Dumplings, served with spinach and a rich black bean soy, offer deep, comforting flavors. However, the Black Perigord Truffle Shumai stole the show. Combining sweet prawns, Kurobuta pork, sesame, and luxurious black truffle slices, this dish delivers an unforgettable umami experience.
For the main courses, we sampled the Lobster Spring Roll, elevated by a perfectly balanced sweet chili sauce, alongside Ingrid Bengis's Scallop Pad Thai. The pad thai tossed rice noodles with fresh bean sprouts, Thai basil, crispy garlic, and peanuts to create a highly satisfying texture. We also highly recommend the Wood Grilled Jidori Chicken. Rubbed with chili and served with broccolini and Sichuan chili crisp, the chicken offers a smoky, complex heat.
Finally, the Crispy Rice Crab Salad provided a refreshing crunch, mixing green cabbage, red onion, and peanuts to round out the meal.
Plan Your Visit
Merois offers an unforgettable dining experience where breathtaking views match the caliber of the cuisine. Whether you want to enjoy a lively lunch or a romantic dinner overlooking the Los Angeles skyline, this rooftop gem deserves a spot on your culinary itinerary.
